In 2006, after 25+ years of “real jobs” and “real life” we decided to quit everything, buy an RV and take off! He always dreamed of doing it, she wasn’t so sure (she likes hotels and room service)! We had a very loose itinerary and absolutely no idea of what we were doing but somehow we did it! It was fabulous!
The one concern throughout our journey was our dog Chip. He adjusted immediately to life on the road, so well we started calling him our “Road Dog”. But from the start we were concerned about what would happen to Chip if something unexpected happened to us. We kept a blog of our RV Adventure but no one knew on any given day exactly where we were. They knew we were in say, Utah, but not exactly what city much less what RV Park or what site. What if we left Chip in the RV and went off sightseeing and got in an accident? How long would it take for someone to figure out we didn’t come back? Who would take care of Chip? And what if something happened back at the RV while we were gone? What if the power went out? What if there was a fire? Who knew how to contact us?
And so the first informal P.E.T. Kit® was born. We taped a sign in the RV window saying we had a pet inside and wrote our cell number on it. Then we took a piece of paper and wrote the name and site where we were staying and carried it with us every time we left Chip. We decided there should be an easier system so when we got home a year later we began developing the Pet Emergency Traveler Kit®.
We use it every time we travel. We were recently at a Pet Expo and stayed in a (pet friendly) hotel. We stuck the Pet Inside sign to the hotel room door (which also served as another reminder to the hotel staff not to make up the room – we don’t like to take the chance Chip could get out if someone opens the door).
We even use it when we are home. We have the Pet Inside sign in our front window so in the event of a fire or other emergency, someone could help Chip or call us.
And we always always carry the Hang Tag and a supply of Pet Info cards in the glove compartment of the car. We want to do everything possible to make sure our precious little Chip is protected!
By the way, we call the company “TedSaid” because his name is Ted and the joke rule in our home is: “When in doubt of who is right, TED SAID!!”
